EU CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY WITH KEY PARTNERS AROUND THE WORLD

Nasdaq

This day is an important date to remember the opportunities gender equality can actually offer. Ensuring diversity and women economic empowerment is crucial for the functioning, the wellbeing and the economy of any society, any group, any organisation.

To mark the International Women's Day 2018, the EU just launched 2 flagship initiatives to support women’s economic empowerment, working with UN Women and the International Labor Organization (ILO). These initiatives aim at strengthening key partnerships with like-minded countries in G7 and Latin America and Caribbean countries, to influence agenda settings in multilateral fora so as to keep gender equality as a priority issue in the world.

In New York, Hilde Hardeman, Head of the European Commission's Service for Foreign Policy Instruments, European Commission, joined Nasdaq and the international business community to ring the bell for Gender Equality. This was a great occasion to present our joint efforts and to illustrate how by convening policymakers, the private sector, and civil society we can increase networking opportunities for women entrepreneurs, create better linkages between companies and ensured heightened anti-discrimination measures.

EU Ambassador to the United States David O' Sullivan explained that both the EU and the US are committed to decrease the gender gap by changing the working mindset and illustrate how they have recently taken steps forward in doing so in an inspiring article available here.

In Toronto, EU Ambassador to Canada Peteris Ustubs opened the market to raise awareness about the business case for women’s economic empowerment and the opportunities for the private sector to advance gender equality and sustainable development.

Together with Japan, these key partners to the EU will cooperate in the framework of a EUR 6 million flagship initiative 'WE EMP♀ WER' to implement the G7’s “Roadmap for a Gender-Responsive Economic Environment” and foster an enabling environment in the public and private sector to advance women’s empowerment at work and female entrepreneurship.

In Uruguay, a EUR 9 million flagship initiative "Win-Win: Gender Equality Means Good Business" focusing on Latin America and Caribbean, was announced by President of Uruguay Tabaré Vázquez, UN Women Representative Maria Noel Vaeza, and EU Ambassador Karl-Otto König.
