Senior Officials of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) meet in Ulaanbaatar to prepare 11th Summit

Senior Officials from the 53 ASEM partners gathered on 12-13 May in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) to prepare for the upcoming 11th ASEM Summit of Heads of State and Government (ASEM 11) to be hosted by Mongolia on 15-16 July. The upcoming ASEM 11 will also mark the 20th Anniversary since the ASEM was inaugurated in 1996 in Bangkok (Thailand).

Mongolia's State Secretary D. Gankhuyag opened the well-attended Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM). The Managing Director for Asia and Pacific at the European External Action Service (EEAS), G. Wiegand, represented the European Union (EU). The meeting was held in an open and constructive atmosphere and Senior Officials discussed in detail the preparations for the ASEM 11 and the 20th anniversary celebrations. Mr. L. Purevsuren, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Mongolia, also hosted a gala dinner for the delegates.

The ASEM SOM was co-organized and co-financed by the EU's Service for Foreign Policy Instruments though the Partnership Instrument. It was preceded by an Asia-Europe Think Tank Dialogue on Connectivity, organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Institute for Strategic Studies of Mongolia, where the EU also played a prominent role.
