This first assistance measure in Ghana provides armoured vehicles and other equipment, as part of the EPF support to the Ghanaian Armed Forces. It is an important milestone in the EU-Ghana partnership on security and defence supporting Ghana and the entire sub-region of the Gulf of Guinea, which faces serious risks of spill-over effects of terrorism in the Sahel.

EU’s military assistance aims to enhance the capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ghana and its civilian population against internal and external aggression and to contribute to peace and stability within the region.

As stated by Josep Borrell, “[…] the Sahel and the Gulf of Guinea will be similarly decisive in determining our future”. He added that the EU is committed “[…] to peace and stability in West Africa, with Ghana as a prominent partner considering its role in furthering democracy, peace and regional stability”.

Over the course of the next months, the EPF will deliver to Ghana additional intelligence and surveillance, electronic warfare systems and riverine, explosive ordnance disposal and military engineering equipment.
