The European Union will participate in this year’s third edition of the Paris Peace Forum, on 11–13 November. The event will bring together the international community and focus on the response to the pandemic and the principles that should apply globally post COVID-19. It will also highlight a series of projects and initiatives from around the world aimed at providing immediate responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, improving our medium-term resilience and rebuilding a more sustainable world.
The EU’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI) will take part in the Paris Peace Forum under the theme Inform and Protect.
The COVID-19 crisis shows us how vital reliable and transparent information is in saving lives and bringing people together. Digital tools can facilitate broad inclusion and contribute to building and sustaining peace, particularly in crisis or conflict situations. At the same time, data protection and privacy rights are key in building public trust and accountability.
On 11 November at 17:00–17:45 CET, Hilde Hardeman, Head of Service of the EU’s Foreign Policy Instruments, will take part in the debate: ‘Disinformed no more – fighting infodemics and building a reliable infosphere’. She will kick off the discussion on how states and societies can promote open, transparent and reliable use of information and data in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while ensuring respect for privacy rights and preventing the spread of harmful information. In line with this year’s theme ‘Inform and Protect’, EU-funded projects aim at supporting national and local media in their efforts to promote transparent and fact-based information while disseminating tools to tackle the spread of harmful content and protect privacy rights.
The debate will be preceded by a project pitch at 13:15 CET. Participants will be able to find out more details about EU-funded projects contributing to a transparent space for information, the fight against misinformation and the protection of citizens' privacy online, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to the activities related to the ‘Inform and Protect’ theme, the EU will be present at the Forum with a series of other EU-funded projects, which will showcase contributions and achievements:
On 12 November, during the official ceremony of the Paris Peace Forum bringing together heads of state and government; Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, will participate.
On 13 November, High Representative/Vice President Josep Borell will also take part in the discussions of the Forum.
