During the mission, FPI representatives attended an advanced drone pilot training session delivered by Défense Conseil International (DCI) to MNJTF personnel. This activity forms part of a broader capacity-building component aimed at strengthening the Force’s ability to use and counter the use of drones in operational contexts.
EU Action in the Lake Chad Basin
As part of its support, the EU is providing an integrated drone training solution that combines the provision of equipment with comprehensive training activities. The overall objective is to build sustainable drone capabilities within the Force, leading to full operational autonomy in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) domain.
The training programme follows a phased approach. The first phase focuses on theoretical instruction and initial training conducted on a drone simulator. This is followed by a second phase where trainees progress to operating operational UAV systems, thereby exposing them to real operational conditions.
Two additional modules complement the training cycle with the inclusion of maintenance training and “train-the trainer” modules. Combined, these components promote long-term sustainability and ownership by enabling MNJTF personnel to independently operate and maintain the delivered equipment, whilst ensuring capacity to train future personnel.
To date, the EU has delivered a total of eight drones, with further equipment deliveries foreseen to counter the use of drones by terrorist groups. This is part of a broader support of military equipment and infrastructure to MNJTF, including the refurbishment of a nautical base, drones and anti-drone systems, boats, individual equipment, ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) services.
This EPF-led initiative highlights the EU's dedication to strengthening regional security, reinforcing its role as a partner to the MNJTF and contributing to long-term peace and stability in the region. Since 2022, the EU has supported the MNJTF for an amount of EUR 130 million.
