Three years of advancing global peace and security: celebrating the European Peace Facility's milestones

Established by the Council Decision (CFSP) 2021/509, the EPF represents an unprecedented stride towards enhancing the EU's role as a key global security provider.

Marking a historic first, the EU through the EPF has procured and delivered military equipment to partner countries, as well as regional and international organisations in need of support, adhering to rigorous safeguards and oversight mechanisms. This has significantly bolstered the EU's global reach and capacity to contribute to international security, amidst the unprecedented rise of conflicts around the world and Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The ultimate aim of the EPF is to preserve peace, prevent conflicts and strengthen international security.

Since its launch, over 30 assistance measures were adopted under the EPF, benefiting 23 partner countries across the globe. Notable recipients of this support include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Ghana, Mauritania, Moldova, Mozambique, North Macedonia, Somalia and Ukraine, underscoring the EPF's global approach to fostering stability.

Operating as an "off-budget" instrument, the EPF is financed through direct contributions from EU Member States, based on the estimated annual budget requirements.

A testament to the EPF's commitment is its unwavering support for Ukraine amidst the challenges posed by ongoing Russia’s war of aggression. The Facility has been instrumental in enhancing the capabilities and resilience of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to safeguard the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty. To date, the EPF has contributed with EUR 6.1 billion in military support to Ukraine, highlighting the EU's resolve to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes. Additional EUR 5 billion under the newly established Ukraine Assistance Fund (UAF) will allow supporting further the evolving needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine through the provision of both lethal and non-lethal military equipment and training.

Following to the establishment of the UAF, the EPF financial ceiling will amount to over EUR 17 billion for the 2021-2027 period.

This steadfast commitment to international security and peace underscores the measurable difference the EPF has made in the global arena, solidifying the EU's position as a key provider of global peace and stability.
